Percentage of teenage pregnant mothers registered (district statistics)/ Family Health Bureau – Sri Lanka

 

Program to ensure the prevention of teenage pregnancies

 

Teenage pregnancies are a major problem prevailing in Sri Lanka.  Therefore, the National Committee on Women has introduced this program to raise awareness about teenage pregnancies in which the prevalence is very high.

In 2010 the Family Health Bureau conducted survey and according to these statistics this program will be conducted at the level of chosen secretariat divisions.

Year 2012

During this year, 9 programs were conducted in the following divisional secretariat.

In Anuradhapura District:

  • East Nuwara Gampalatha

  • Kebithigollewa

  • Thalawa

Other divisional secretariat

  • Manmune North

  • Korale pathu North

  • South Kiran

  • Deraniyagala

  • Tangalle

  • Maharagama

There were 957 beneficiaries.

 

Year 2013

During this year, 9 programs were conducted in the following divisional secretariat:

  • Kanttankudy

  • Kinniya

  • Maritimepattu

  • Deraniyagala

  • Kebithigollewa

  • Ratnapura

  • Matara

  • Meegahakivula

  • Teldeniya

During this year Rs 150,000 and there were 1304 people were beneficiaries.

 

Year 2014

In 2014, the numbers of programs were increased and more funds were allocated at the request of Women Development Officer. Programs were conducted in the following divisional secretariat:

  • Puttlam

  • Karuwalagaswewa

  • Bulathkohupitiya

  • Kegalle

  • Gampaha

  • Manthai East

  • Deraniyagala

  • Pudukuduirippu

  • Karachchi

  • Kandawalai

  • Kirinda Puhulwella

  • Yatawatta

  • Muthoor

  • Hangurangketha

 

Year 2015

In 2015, the number of programs was 15 covering districts of Nuwera Eliya and Trincomalli

In Nuwera Eliya

  • Kothmale

  • Nuwera Eliya

  • Ambagamuwa

In Trincomalli

  • Gomarankadawala

  • Kantalai

  • Kinniya

  • Kuchchaveli

  • Morawewa

 

The following facts were discussed at meetings at the programs

  1. Development of physical and mental developmet of the teenage mother and her child

  2. The challenges ahead of teenagers and health repercussions

  3. The ways in how the village population can be educated to prevent this problem.

  4. Discussions on the problems on migration of mothers for employment, drug and alcoholism, sex education and inadequate laws to prevent under aged marriages.
